Abstract
This paper concerns the relation between 17th-century music and ancient Greek tradition. Composers, poets and scientists drew within the numerous antic sources the models that influenced and supported their science and art. These models are described into three categories: archaic model (orphic ideal of the poet-musician, epic and lyric poetry); Hellenistic model (musical status in the Aristoxenian sense); Aristotelian models (poetic and rhetoric). The different reasons of the ancient Greek model's disavowal are finally examined, since the experimental sciences' development to the Ancients and Moderns' Quarrel.
